Cartagena

I have been wanting to go to Colombia for as long as I can remember. I was told, it is the place to go in South America. It was supposed to be not dangerous anymore and the friendliest place in South America. On top of that, the lost city trek is there. It is a trail where you hike for several days through the jungle until you hit a lost city. It sounded quite amazing, and after my “Indiana Jones”‘s like trip to Jordan the previous year, I couldn’t resist. 🙂
I started my trip in Cartagena, which is a beautiful small little town directly by the sea. Cartagena really reminded me of New Orleans, every house being painted in a different color and the same dreadful humidity. I didn’t do much in Cartagena other than stroll through the streets, visit the tiny little art museum that they had and an old castle outside of the city. The place was quite dead when I was there. Surprisingly few tourists and most Colombians were hiding inside from the heat.

It really surprised me how little English (or really any other language than Spanish) people spoke. To be very honest, among all my travels to countries such as Uzbekistan, Tibet, Jordan, Mongolia etc, Colombia was the most difficult one to be understood. It was sort of interesting and unexpected, and made this trip much more difficult than I thought it would be.

People also seemed to be very skeptical of me. Obviously I stod out with my light skin color and blue eyes, but whenever I smiled to people in the street, they would scrutinize me from top to bottom and wouldn’t be quite sure how to react. It was a fine and very interesting place to be, but it wasn’t exactly the friendliest country I have been to…
